Exoteric and Esoteric Perspectives on the Bible
This working paper, authored by Brian K Burwell II, presents a comparative study of the Bible through both exoteric (literal) and esoteric (mystical or spiritual) perspectives. Each book of the Old and New Testaments is briefly summarized in both dimensions, offering insights into the historical narratives and their symbolic, transformative meanings. The exoteric perspective emphasizes historical accounts, laws, prophecies, and teachings as they appear in the literal text. The esoteric perspective, however, reveals deeper spiritual truths, where events and characters serve as metaphors for the soul’s journey toward divine union. Examples include: Genesis as the unfolding of divine creation and spiritual evolution. Exodus as liberation from material bondage toward spiritual fulfillment. The Gospels as both the life of Jesus and symbolic blueprints for inner awakening. Revelation as the final realization of spiritual renewal and union with God. This dual framework demonstrates how scripture can be approached not only as sacred history but also as a guidebook for spiritual transformation, bridging faith traditions, philosophy, and mysticism.
