THE SOCIO ECONOMIC AND PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPACT OF THE ARMED CONFLICT BETWEEN THE ETHIOPIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND TPLF IN WAGHIMRA ZONE, ZIQUALA WOREDA

ABSTRACT In recent years, conflicts, especially intra-state conflicts, have become increasingly common, occurring almost anywhere and at any time. Ethiopia is among the countries that have faced recurrent internal conflicts. These conflicts often have devastating consequences, leaving nations unable to recover from the extensive human and material losses. This study seeks to investigate the socio-economic and psychological impacts of the armed conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and TPLF in Ziquala Woreda. To accomplish this, a mixed research approach was employed, combining primary and secondary data sources with the use of both simple random and purposive sampling techniques, to ensure comprehensive and detailed data analysis. The findings reveal that most residents of Ziquala Woreda were affected by the conflict between Ethiopian federal government and TPLF, both directly and indirectly. The conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and TPLF has caused the displacement 33457 individuals and reduced household food availability and consumption. The armed conflict has disrupted the delivery of essential services to the communities. It has also had a significant negative impact on the psychological well-being and overall health of the population during and after the conflict. Moreover, acts of violence such as rape and sexual assault have contributed to psychological disorders, particularly depression. Additionally, armed conflict has reduced trust and collaboration among community members. Accordingly it is recommended that, internal conflicts should be addressed by the government when they are still at the latent stage or before they become violent and destructive.
