The Academic Qualifications and Professional Competencies of Mathematics Teachers as Factors Affecting Senior Secondary School Examination Outcomes in North-East Nigeria

This study examined the academic qualifications and professional competencies of mathematics teachers as factors affecting Senior Secondary School Examination (SSCE) outcomes in North-East Nigeria. Using datasets of 200 mathematics teachers and 900 students, the study analyzed teacher qualifications, pedagogical skills, instructional strategies, technology integration, and assessment practices using SPSS version 26. Results revealed that higher teacher qualifications (M. Ed, PhD) are associated with better SSCE outcomes, with pass rates increasing from 55% (NCE) to 85% (PhD). Professional competencies were generally high in pedagogy and instructional strategies but weaker in technology integration. The study concludes that teacher qualifications and professional competencies significantly determine mathematics achievement. It recommends upgrading minimum teacher qualifications, enhancing professional development, and integrating ICT into teaching.
