Thao Suranari: The Heroine of Nakhon Ratchasima
This article presents the life, heroic deeds, and commemoration of Thao Suranari (Khun Ying Mo), the heroine of Nakhon Ratchasima who played a crucial role in resisting King Anouvong’s Lao army in 1826 (B.E. 2369). Her leadership inspired the townspeople to reclaim their freedom, leading King Rama III to bestow upon her the noble title “Thao Suranari.” Monuments were later erected in her honor and commemorative medals were created to preserve her legacy, particularly the 1967 (B.E. 2510) medal issued by Wat Sutthachinda for the restoration of the Suranari Monument. This medal, consecrated by renowned meditation masters and respected monks, is among the most revered and widely collected Thao Suranari medals. It symbolizes not only local pride but also enduring faith, courage and the cultural heritage of the Korat people.
