Navigating Challenges in Elementary School Administrator in Rural Schools: Digital Technology in Focus
This study explored the experiences of elementary school heads in rural settings concerning the availability and use of digital technology. Specifically, it aimed to examine their lived experiences with digital access, how they manage schools amid technological limitations, and the educational management insights that can be drawn from their efforts. Adopting a phenomenological approach, the study utilized in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to gain a rich understanding of the participants’ realities. Thematic analysis revealed several key findings. In terms of experiences with digital technology, school heads reported increased efficiency in administrative workflows and expanded access to training and collaboration opportunities. However, they also faced major constraints, such as unreliable internet connectivity, limited infrastructure, and low digital competence and confidence among staff. In coping with these challenges, school leaders employed strategies such as adaptive scheduling, the use of offline alternatives, and leading by example in digital upskilling to encourage their teams. From an educational management perspective, three major insights emerged: technological resilience, transformational leadership in digital adoption, and contextualized technology integration. These findings underscore the need for responsive policies and sustained support to empower rural school leaders in leveraging digital tools effectively despite limited resources.
