Effect of Time Management on Students Academic Achievement: Comparative Study between Dire Dawa University and Rift-Valley Universty

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of time management on students’ academic Achievement between DDU and RVU. The paper tried to describe the level of students’ time management and the relationship between time management dimensions and academic achievement in both universities. The researcher applied stratified random sampling technique in which 386 sample respondents were taken as a sample. Primary data was collected via questionnaire. Both Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysis. Descriptive statistics was used to generate percentage, frequency, means and standard deviations. Independent sample T-test, correlations, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression and post hoc test analysis procedure were employed. Data was manipulated using SPSS V. 20.0. The mean score for time planning and prioritizationof students indicates that it was to the moderate and lower extent for DDU and RVU,the level of avoiding procrastination and time attitude of students was to the lower extent, whereasstudent’s socialization level was to higher extent. The independent t test revealed that prioritization, avoiding procrastination & time attitude has no significant difference among the universities with p-value of (0.963), (0.786) and (0.584) respectively; whereas there was statistically significant difference between the universities on time planning and socialization with p-value (0.000). All time management attributes except socialization have strong positive correlation with students’ academic achievement (r >=0.7). The highest significant positive correlation was observed with time planning. Further student’s socialization has negative and significance relationship with academic achievement (r =-0.759). Regression result indicates that 58.4% of total variation in academic achievement is explained by independent variables included in the model. In addition, all the independent variables have a highly significance effect on academic achievement with p-value of less than 0.05. One-way ANOVA result indicated that there was no significance difference of time management between students due to their gender with a p-value of (0.214). Whereas students time management were different due to their year of study, age, college and CGPA (p-value< 0.05). Based on finding the researcher recommends the universities should provide time management training for students. It may help them free themselves from negative consequences of academic achievement which is brought about by poor time management.
