From Morphogen Gradients to Cellular Intelligence_ A Unified Framework for a Cell Differentiation Index (CDI)
Abstract This paper introduces the Cell Differentiation Index (CDI), a unified mathematical framework that bridges Alan Turing’s reaction-diffusion model of morphogen gradients with Michael Levin’s paradigm of bioelectric pattern memory and cellular intelligence. The CDI quantifies the expected differentiation yield by integrating chemical potential with a bioelectric gain function, offering a predictive tool for computational morphogenesis. This synthesis provides a novel lens for understanding cell fate decisions and anatomical patterning, with implications across regenerative medicine, oncology, and synthetic biology. The framework is formalized through a set of equations that link biological correlates to mathematical constructs, enabling experimental validation and future expansion into stochastic and matrix-based models. The CDI represents a foundational step toward programmable biological systems and a deeper understanding of non-neural cognition in morphogenesis.
