Marking the Mind - Revelation, Recursive Identity, and the Neurodynamics of the 'Beast' as Positive Signal
Marking the Mind – Revelation, Recursive Identity, and the Neurodynamics of the ‘Beast’ as Positive Signal reinterprets the “mark of the beast” motif from the Book of Revelation through contemporary neuroscience and predictive coding theory. Instead of treating the mark as a purely negative cipher, the paper models it as a positive, identity-marking signal that emerges through ritual practices such as fasting, baptism, and liturgical recitation. Drawing on EEG and fMRI research, the study links symbolic “marks” and ritual repetition to measurable brain dynamics (theta, alpha, gamma oscillations), neuromodulatory systems (dopamine, noradrenaline, BDNF), and metabolic plasticity induced by fasting. Using the Recursive Identity Field (URF/ROS framework), Revelation’s motifs — “mark,” “seal,” “kairos,” and the “beast/lamb” dialectic — are recast as recursive inscriptions in evolving identity fields. The work integrates biblical hermeneutics, cognitive neuroscience, and ritual ethnography, proposing empirically testable predictions (EEG coherence in fasting cycles, DMN–salience coupling during prayer, BDNF correlations with ritual states, hyperscanning of group synchrony). In this frame, Revelation functions as a cultural technology of renewal: a script for reorienting perception, affect, and social belonging through symbol, body, and brain.
