Numerical Study of Carbon Dioxide Injection into a Saturated Porous Reservoir with Non-Uniform Permeability

Growing global industrialization and overexploitation of fossil fuels have led to carbon dioxide emissions, which have become one of the causes of rising global temperature and environmental problems. Therefore, there is an urgent need to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. One of the promising ways to reduce the amount of CO $${}_{2}$$ in the atmosphere is its capture and creation of underground gas hydrate storage facilities for carbon dioxide utilization. Evaluation of the efficiency of geological gas hydrate storage of carbon dioxide requires theoretical study of the problem of carbon dioxide conservation in porous reservoirs. In this regard, in the work, in a two-dimensional axisymmetric approximation, mathematical modeling of the process of gas hydrate formation during the injection of carbon dioxide into a zonally heterogeneous porous reservoir saturated in the initial state with methane and water is performed. The model takes into account the presence of phase transitions (hydrate formation, solubility of carbon dioxide in water), water and gas filtration, heat exchange of the considered porous reservoir with the surrounding rocks. The influence of the parameters of the injected carbon dioxide and the duration of its injection on the distributions of temperature, pressure, and phases saturations in the porous reservoir is considered. Calculations are performed for the location of an injection well in the reservoir zone with a higher permeability value.
