Community Survey on Paracetamol Usage, Safety Awareness, and Self-Medication Practices

This study investigated paracetamol usage patterns, safety awareness, and self-medication practices among rural and urban populations, with a focus on identifying potential misuse and knowledge gaps regarding daily dose limits and side effects. The chief objective of the following study was to evaluate the frequency of paracetamol consumption & individual medication practices and to evaluate the level of safety awareness and knowledge regarding paracetamol's daily dose limit and potential side effects, also to explore the rural-urban differences in paracetamol usage and safety awareness. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining online surveys via Google Forms and in-person interviews with 55-65 participants from rural and urban areas. The results revealed inadequate knowledge regarding paracetamol's daily dose limit and potential adverse effects, which includes damage of the liver and kidney, and an extended high risk of cardiovascular events. A significant proportion of participants reported self-medication practices that often exceeded recommended dosages, highlighting the need for enhanced education and awareness campaigns to promote safe paracetamol usage. Notably, rural respondents demonstrated lower safety awareness compared to their urban counterparts, highlighting the necessity for specific actions to tackle the disparity in safety awareness and self-medication habits between rural and urban areas. These findings have implications for public health policy and practice, emphasizing the importance of addressing knowledge gaps and promoting safe medication practices. Furthermore, the study highlights the need for healthcare professionals to emphasize proper dosing and potential risks to patients, particularly in rural areas. Overall, this study contributes to the existing literature on paracetamol usage and safety awareness, underscoring the need for a multifaceted approach to promote safe medication practices and mitigate potential health risks associated with paracetamol misuse.
