Jayne Cortez: 1934–2012
Abstract: Portrait of a surrealist friendship in tribute to Jayne Cortez, in which Rosemont remembers her friend Jayne, whose life and work was marked by jazz, poetry, and surrealism. Influenced by Négritude, Cortez began self-publishing in 1969 with Pissstained Stairs and the Monkey Man's Wares . Rosemont recounts their first meeting, after Cortez was introduced to the Chicago surrealist group by Ted Joans, and their trip together to New York City where they stayed in the Chelsea Hotel and crossed paths with Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen.
