Black Soldier Fly Larvae: A Promising Nature Based Solution to Solid Waste Management and Circular Economy

Solid waste management poses a significant challenge worldwide, particularly in densely populated countries like India. The Indian Himalayan region also faces formidable obstacles in managing solid waste due to its extreme topography and climate, making waste management exceedingly difficult. The black soldier fly larvae and its technological application in organic waste management can be a promising naturebased solution in managing solid waste in the Indian Himalayan Mountains. It can enhance the bioconversion of biodegradable waste; the larvae can efficiently convert waste into organic fertilizer, and also provide nutritious animal feed. Black soldier fly larvae farming has the potential to resolve the solid waste crisis in both urban and rural areas and generate employment and contribute in reinstating a circular economy. The characteristics of Black soldier fly and the advantages of Black soldier fly larvae farming in increasing the efficiency of solid waste management, benefits and challenges are discussed here.
