On the Embedding of the Standard Model Gauge Group into SU(4)

We present a simple observation regarding the embedding of the Standard Model gauge group into SU(4). While the Standard Model group SU(3)C×SU(2)L×U(1)Y has a total of 12 generators, the group SU(4) has 15. Thus, embedding the Standard Model gauge group into SU(4) automatically produces three additional generators. We raise the question of whether these extra generators may correspond to new physical symmetries or interactions beyond the Standard Model.

Abstract

We present a simple observation regarding the embedding of the Standard Model gauge group into SU(4). While the Standard Model group SU(3)C×SU(2)L×U(1)Y has a total of 12 generators, the group SU(4) has 15. Thus, embedding the Standard Model gauge group into SU(4) automatically produces three additional generators. We raise the question of whether these extra generators may correspond to new physical symmetries or interactions beyond the Standard Model.
