ECONOMIC CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR CO-OPERATIVE DAIRIES IN MODERN INDIA

The dairy industry in India holds a pivotal position in the country’s agricultural and rural economy, with co-operative dairies serving as a cornerstone for inclusive growth and farmer empowerment. Emerging from the success of the Amul model, co-operatives have contributed significantly to milk production, rural income generation, and food security. However, in the rapidly evolving economic landscape, these dairies face multiple challenges, including competition from private players, fluctuating input costs, and the need for technological modernization. At the same time, the sector presents numerous opportunities driven by rising domestic demand for value-added dairy products, government support, digitalization, and export potential. This paper explores the historical background of co-operative dairies in India, their relevance to the national economy, the economic challenges they face, and the future opportunities available for sustainable growth.
