Deadly swarm: A tragic case of fatal bee stings
ABSTRACT According to epidemiological data from the World Health Organization, an estimated 1–2% of the global population exhibits severe allergic reactions to insect stings, with honeybees being one of the primary culprits. Honeybees have a barbed stinger which contains two lancets that become firmly attached to human skin. As a result of which, in cases where death occurs due to a bee sting, the stinger can still be found firmly attached to the body (skin). Bee sting may lead to systemic toxic reactions due to multiple stings like vomiting, diarrhea, and shock which may last for 24 h if not fatal. However, sometimes, an anaphylactic reaction may occur immediately or within a few minutes which may lead to death. A case is being reported here where a patient experienced an allergic reaction after being stung by a swarm of bees, eventually leading to his death after more than an hour. Early recognition and prompt medical intervention are crucial in such cases to prevent fatal outcomes. This report emphasizes the need for increased awareness, preparedness, and access to emergency medical care in regions prone to bee attacks, ensuring that timely treatment can save lives.
