Design and Construction of an Arduino based home Automated System using Radio Frequency Technologies and an android system

ABSTRACT The rapid growth of smart home technologies has heightened the need for affordable, reliable, and user-friendly automation systems for home and offices. Many existing solutions are expensive, reliant on proprietary platforms, and constrained by network dependencies or limited communication range. This study presents the design and construction of an Arduino-based home automation system that integrates radio frequency (RF) communication technologies with an Android smartphone application. The system architecture consists of an Arduino Uno microcontroller, 433 MHz RF modules, and relay drivers for appliance control, while the Android interface which is developed with MIT App Inventor providing an intuitive real-time operation. Performance evaluation focused on communication range, latency, power consumption, and reliability under repeated test cycles. Experimental results demonstrated an indoor range of 25 meters and an outdoor range of 40 meters, ensuring adequate coverage for typical residential environments. The system achieved an average latency of 0.5 seconds, offering near-instantaneous responsiveness, and consumed only 50 mA, confirming its energy efficiency. Reliability testing over 200 cycles yielded a 97% success rate, with minor transmission losses attributed to environmental interference. These findings establish that the proposed system is cost-effective, efficient, and suitable for small-scale residential and office automation. Its simplicity and accessibility make it particularly valuable in low-resource settings, while future enhancements such as feedback mechanisms, encryption protocols, and hybrid communication strategies can further improve scalability and security.
