Evaluation of Senna tora (L) Roxb.DPJ as a Biostimulant for Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) Seed Germination

The use of plant-derived bio stimulants is gaining prominence as an eco-friendly approach to enhance seed germination and seedling development. This study evaluated the effect of Senna tora Deproteinised Juice (DPJ) on the seed germination of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). Fresh leaves of Senna tora (L) Roxb. were processed to extract DPJ, which was then applied at different concentrations (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%) along with distilled water as a control. Seeds were surface-sterilized and germinated under controlled laboratory conditions. Parameters such as germination percentage, root length, and shoot length were recorded. Results revealed that seeds treated with 20% Senna tora (L) Roxb. DPJ exhibited significantly higher germination percentage (up to 90%) compared to the control, while higher concentrations showed a mild inhibitory effect. The enhancement in germination and seedling growth may be attributed to the presence of phytohormones, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds in the DPJ. This study demonstrates that Senna tora (L) Roxb. DPJ, particularly at optimized concentrations, can serve as a cost-effective and sustainable bio stimulant to improve tomato seed germination and early seedling development.
