Invisible Surrealists and the Black Atlantic: Intersections Between Légitime Défense (1932) and Dos Brasis: Arte e Pensamento Negro (2023)
Abstract: By highlighting critical contributions to the Caribbean and Brazilian contexts, this article seeks to demonstrate how two distinct productions—the 1932 magazine Légitime Défense and the 2023 exhibition Dos Brasis: Arte e Pensamento Negro —not only confront hegemonic hierarchies and the legacy of colonial racism but also empower marginalized voices. Their impact manifests both within the international history of surrealism and through indirect yet significant connections, underscoring the role of criticism in contemporary debates on aesthetics and identity in art.
