UNVEILING HISTORICAL INSIGHTS FLOOD DISASTER MITIGATION IN SOLO CITY, INDONESIA
Solo City is a renowned cultural centre in Indonesia. Despite persistent efforts to mitigate the floods that plague, the city continues to face recurring flooding, causing substantial damage to its infrastructure and impeding its progress. This study explores the historical background of Solo City flooding and flood mitigation strategies. Secondary data from diverse sources such as documents, books, journals, maps, and visual materials were the most predominant sources used. Primary data was also collected via interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders and residents in flood prone areas; respondents were chosen using purposive sampling. A historical approach was employed to analyse the data. The study revealed that flooding has plagued Solo City for centuries, with notable f loods occurring in 1886 resulting in casualties and property destruction. Since 1857, various flood mitigation measures, including structural and non-structural interventions have been implemented. These initiatives involve redirecting river flows, constructing new waterways, reinforcing embankments, securing riverbanks, building canals installing water gates, implementing Early Warning Systems, relocating residents from flood-prone areas, and actively engaging the community in mitigation efforts. Despite the comprehensive nature of these measures, flooding remains an ongoing challenge in Solo City. The results of reviewing the history of flood mitigation in the Solo area as a reference for future policymaking by stakeholders regarding flood disaster mitigation
