ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MARKETING: A DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD OF INNOVATION AND RISK
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the marketing landscape across the globe, and India is no exception. With its vast consumer base, linguistic diversity, and increasing digital adoption, India presents both immense potential and unique challenges for AI-driven marketing. This article explores the dual nature of AI in Indian marketing, highlighting it as a double-edged sword—one that offers innovation on one side and significant risks on the other. On the opportunity front, AI enables hyper-personalization, predictive analytics, real-time customer engagement, and improved decision-making. Companies like Swiggy and BigBasket have successfully implemented AI to enhance customer experience, forecast demand, and optimize marketing campaigns. The use of chatbots, voice assistants, and recommendation engines has further strengthened consumer-brand interaction, making marketing more efficient and data-driven. However, the risks associated with AI are equally significant. Issues such as data privacy breaches, algorithmic bias, over-automation, exclusion of digitally underserved populations, and lack of regulatory clarity pose serious concerns. Cases of failed AI-driven campaigns underscore the dangers of poor localization, opaque data usage, and loss of human empathy in automated marketing strategies. Through a socio-technical lens, this article examines real-world examples from India, evaluates both successful and problematic implementations, and provides actionable insights. It emphasizes the importance of ethical AI deployment, regulatory preparedness, and culturally sensitive practices. In conclusion, while AI offers transformative potential for Indian marketers, a balanced, responsible, and inclusive approach is essential to harness its benefits while mitigating its pitfalls.
