Implementation Strategic to Adopting Electronic Health Record (EHR) In U.S. Hospitals
Electronic Health Records (EHRs) hold promise for improving care quality and reducing costs in the U.S. healthcare system. Despite this potential, many hospitals struggle with adoption due to challenges such as inconsistent standards, limited funding, poor interoperability, and low physician engagement. Adoption has also been slowed by misaligned incentives, financial constraints, and uncertainty around the reliability and value of EHR solutions. This paper reviews EHR implementation across U.S. hospitals, clarifies key concepts, and explores common barriers. Drawing from both academic and commercial development experiences, we offer practical recommendations to support broader adoption—including financial incentives, standardization efforts, enabling policies, and targeted education and outreach for healthcare providers and patients.
