Neurodiversity in the Boardroom: A Governance Revolution Ahead
Corporate governance reforms have broadened gender and ethnic diversity, yet cognitive and neurodiversity remain overlooked. This white paper argues that neuroinclusion must become a strategic imperative for twenty-first-century boards. Neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia, bring distinctive strengths such as pattern recognition, anomaly detection, entrepreneurial drive, and ethical clarity. When supported by inclusive governance processes, these strengths can elevate strategic vision, sharpen risk oversight, and improve decision quality. Drawing on evidence from behavioural science, organisational research, and governance codes, the paper positions neurodiversity as a measurable contributor to board effectiveness. It introduces the NeuroFinance lens and proprietary frameworks from the NEURO Method, including the SNR Principle and Vocabulary of Vision, as original contributions to governance practice. A practical Board Neuroinclusion System is proposed, covering composition, process, information design, environment, and accountability. Illustrative case studies, anchored in published research, demonstrate how neurodiverse directors can strengthen innovation, compliance, and crisis response. Sector applications are explored across financial services, technology, healthcare, manufacturing, and the public sector. Alignment is mapped against the UK Corporate Governance Code and IoD Ireland practices, with recommendations for training and evaluation. Extended discussions highlight ADHD in entrepreneurship, dyslexic pattern recognition, and autistic moral reasoning, while counterarguments are addressed with evidence from Deloitte, McKinsey, and Harvard Business Review. A methodological note outlines how future empirical studies can test neuroinclusive governance. The paper concludes that neurodiversity is not a cultural add-on but a governance quality system. Boards that embed cognitive inclusion will reduce groupthink, enhance resilience, and build long-term value. Neurodiversity is not a footnote to reform but the next chapter in corporate governance.
