Reimagining School Education through NEP 2020: Implementation Challenges and Possibilities
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 presents a bold and forward-thinking vision for reimagining school education in India. It proposes transformative changes in curriculum, pedagogy, and governance structures, shifting the focus from rote learning to holistic, experiential, and multidisciplinary education. This paper critically examines the core reforms in school education under NEP 2020, including the introduction of the 5+3+3+4 structure, foundational literacy and numeracy mission, emphasis on mother tongue as the medium of instruction, and the integration of vocational education and technology. It also explores the key challenges in implementation—such as teacher training, infrastructural gaps, linguistic diversity, digital divide, and policy uniformity across states. The paper argues that effective implementation of NEP 2020 requires a collaborative, decentralized, and contextsensitive approach that considers India's socio-economic diversity. The study concludes that while NEP 2020 is visionary, its success hinges on sustained political will, adequate funding, and capacity building at all levels.
