Unlocking Innovation for Agricultural Mechanization, Promoting Creative Commons over Proprietary IP Models in Nigeria
This publication explores how Creative Commons licensing and open innovation can unlock Nigeria’s agricultural mechanization potential. It examines the historical context, current challenges, and economic opportunities in mechanization, while contrasting proprietary intellectual property (IP) models with open frameworks. By highlighting the benefits of Creative Commons for smallholder farmers—who provide over 80% of Nigeria’s food—the work argues for policies and capacity-building that lower barriers to technology adoption. It further outlines infrastructure, financing, and regulatory needs, offering a roadmap for inclusive growth, food security, and sustainable agricultural transformation in Nigeria.
