ASSESSMENT OF SMART INVERTER INTEGRATION FOR VOLTAGE STABILITY IN NIGERIAN POWER GRID

Nigeria’s transition to solar energy presents notable voltage stability challenges due to the intermittent nature of solar PV systems. Fluctuations in solar generation can cause voltage sags, frequency deviations, and reactive power imbalances, all of which compromise power quality and grid reliability. Smart inverters, equipped with advanced grid-support functions, offer a promising solution to these issues. They enable reactive power control, voltage regulation, and improved fault ride-through capabilities, making them essential for stable solar integration. This study investigates the role of smart inverters in enhancing voltage stability within Nigeria’s solar power systems. A MATLAB/Simulink simulation was conducted where a fault was introduced at 0.4 seconds and cleared at 0.6 seconds. Without smart inverters, the system experienced severe voltage dips and high fault currents, indicating significant stress on the grid. In contrast, when smart inverters were deployed, voltage fluctuations were reduced and fault currents were better controlled. Key performance indicators (KPIs) such as voltage sag depth, fault current magnitude, real power drop, reactive power overshoot, and recovery time confirmed the benefits. Smart inverters reduced voltage sag depth by up to 40% and improved recovery time by over 50%. These findings highlight the importance of smart inverter integration in Nigeria’s solar installations. To enhance grid resilience, regulatory policies should mandate their use, alongside investments in research, operator training, and financial incentives. As Nigeria expands its renewable capacity, smart inverters will be crucial for maintaining grid stability and ensuring a reliable, efficient energy future
