Le ciel va nous tomber sur la tête: Dealing with anxiety as an academic
Read it on Medium (preferred). Leading a lab means marching like a village chief while quietly watching for budget meteors and attacks by Reviewer #3. Here is a playbook to turning irrational academic dread into strategy and momentum. Like a few of you, I grew up devouring Astérix — the classic French comic series about a plucky Gaulish village that endlessly outwits the Romans, helped by a magic potion and plenty of cheek. That’s where I first met the gloriously endearing village chief Abraracourcix (Vitalstatistix), who fears nothing. He laughs at Romans, mocks invaders, and never doubts his people. But he admits to one nagging dread: “Le ciel va nous tomber sur la tête.” The sky might fall on his head. It’s a joke that sticks because it’s true: bravery coexists with an oddly specific dread.
