Study on the Scope of Roof Gardening and Vertical Farming in the Selected Condominium of Dhaka City, Bangladesh

Rapid urbanization in Dhaka has reduced natural spaces and created challenges related to food security, environmental quality, and community well-being. This study explores the scope and feasibility of rooftop gardening and vertical farming within selected condominiums in Dhaka City, highlighting their role in enhancing sustainability. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected through field surveys, interviews with architects and residents, and on-site observations. Two case studies “Chayabithi” and “Shopnonir” condominiums—were examined for their design features, functionality, and resident perceptions regarding green initiatives. Findings reveal that rooftop gardening is gaining acceptance as an attractive feature for both residents and developers, providing recreational value, social interaction, and environmental benefits such as improved air quality and reduced building energy costs. However, vertical farming remains largely absent due to financial constraints, maintenance challenges, and limitations in shared ownership of spaces. While residents express interest in cultivating vegetables, most rooftop gardens currently favor ornamental plants. The study concludes that rooftop gardening has strong potential as a sustainable urban strategy in Dhaka, whereas vertical farming requires greater institutional support, technical guidance, and investment. Integrating these green infrastructures into future urban planning can help address pressing ecological and social needs in high-density environments.
