A MODULAR PEDAGOGICAL MODEL FOR BARTÓK'S VIOLA CONCERTO: STRUCTURAL FINGERING AND EXPRESSIVE TRAINING
ABSTRACT Objective: Traditional viola pedagogical methods often fail to address the technical demands of 20th-century modernist repertoire. This study aims to develop a modular pedagogical model, the Structural Fingering Framework (SFF) (refer to Glossary), to specifically tackle the technical challenges of Bartók’s Viola Concerto (Serly version) and enhance the teaching of modernist works. Methods: The study employs the SFF, a system centered on finger kinematics, to analyze the Serly version of Bartók’s Viola Concerto. Through SFF analysis, core technical challenges are identified, and corresponding training models are designed. These components are integrated into a Five-Step Pedagogy for systematic implementation. Results: Three key technical challenges are identified: Chromatic Clusters, Asymmetric Double Stops, and Extended Position Shifts. Corresponding training models include: (1) Positional Anchoring System (see Glossary)(shift stability); (2) Harmonic Pre-hearing Drills (intonation); (3) Rhythmic Deconstruction Models (see Glossary)(complex rhythms). These are integrated into the Five-Step Pedagogy: Skeletal Reduction Position Mapping Micro-shift Calibration (see Glossary) Bow-speed Algorithm Emotional Vectoring (see Glossary). Conclusion: The SFF-based modular model provides a targeted solution for the technical demands of Bartók’s concerto. Its adaptable, modular design enhances viola pedagogy globally, equipping educators to address technical proficiency and advance the teaching of 20th-century modernist repertoire.
