Synergistic Fusion of Convolutional Neural Networks and Vision Transformers for Robust Image Segmentation.

Image segmentation, a foundational task in computer vision, involves partitioning an image into meaningful regions or objects. While traditional methods have proven useful, they often struggle with complex scenes, occlusions, and variability in object pose and appearance. The advent of deep learning has revolutionized this field, offering powerful solutions, particularly with the rise of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). However, a persistent challenge lies in the trade-off between capturing fine-grained local details and understanding global context. This paper presents a novel hybrid deep learning architecture that addresses this limitation by effectively integrating the strengths of both CNNs for feature extraction and vision transformers for contextual modeling. Our proposed model, trained and validated on diverse datasets including medical and natural scene images, demonstrates superior performance compared to state-of-the-art methods in terms of pixel-wise accuracy, Dice coefficient, and Intersection over Union (IoU). The results highlight the efficacy of our approach in achieving more precise and robust segmentation, with significant implications for applications in autonomous driving, medical imaging, and industrial automation.
