Validation of 3-Point Bending Strength of PETG Material Printed via FDM Using FEA

This paper analyses the flexural strength of the PETG material prepared by Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) techniques. The present study validates experimental and numerical approaches in this regard. Samples were prepared based on the ASTM D790 standards and tested by 3-point bending to understand their mechanical properties. The simulation was carried out using ANSYS 24®, predicting the strength of the specimen under bending as 48.71 MPa. Experimental testing resulted in a value of 46 MPa, showing great correlation between FEA and experiments with less than 3% error. Hence, this proved that the proposed numerical model has high accuracy while validating the authenticity of the predicted mechanical properties concerning the additively manufactured materials using ANSYS software. These findings prove the utility of FDM and FEA to accurately and effectively assess the mechanical properties, mainly for applications of engineering involving high-performance thermoplastics such as PETG.
