BALANCING VERTICAL INTEGRATION AND STRATEGIC OUTSOURCING: A FRAMEWORK FOR OPTIMAL BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

This study provides a quantitative assessment of how vertical integration (VI) and strategic outsourcing (SO)strategies influence financial and operational performance, culminating in a data-driven framework for strategicdecision-making. By analyzing key metrics such as profit margins, R&D expenses, Capital Expenditures (CapEx),and inventory turnover over the past decade, this analysis links tangible performance outcomes to the distinctstrategic choices made by seven industry leaders from global and Saudi Arabian markets. The findings show thatfor Apple, VI in design and silicon, coupled with SO for manufacturing, has resulted in robust margins. Inditexdemonstrates high VI in its fast-fashion model, yielding high inventory turnover. Toyota employs a hybrid model, with escalating R&D reflecting its strategic shifts. In the Saudi context, the analysis reveals how deep VI in foodproduction (Almarai) drives high capital intensity for control, while in retail (Jarir and eXtra), SO ofmanufacturing enables a focus on operational efficiency and service integration. These comparative findings aresynthesized to construct the proposed framework, which underscores that the optimal VI/SO balance hinges onaligning strategic choices with specific corporate objectives and market conditions.
