The Effect of Plumage Colour on the Reproductive Performance of Japanese Quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica)
This study investigated the impact of plumage colour on the reproductive performance of Japanese quails in Nigeria. A total of 80 birds (40 Black and 40 White) were managed under a Completely Randomized Design. Results revealed that the White strain attained sexual maturity earlier, had a higher body weight at first egg, and demonstrated superior weekly egg production and egg weight. Although the Black strain showed a marginally higher fertility rate, hatchability was comparable. The White strain also produced significantly heavier chicks. The study concludes that plumage colour is a significant factor in quail reproductive traits and recommends the White strain for enhanced productivity in Nigerian quail enterprises.
