Double Viscous Damper for Seismic Response Control of Asymmetric Tall Building

This study introduces and explores the effectiveness of innovative passive single-cylinder Linear Double Viscous Damper (LDVD) by modifying and replacing conventional linear viscous damper (CLVD) to study the seismic responses of 25-storey one-way asymmetric tall R.C.C building. The mathematical model of double viscous damper is proposed. To prove the effectiveness of proposed LDVD, tall system is 3D modelled and designed in ETABS to analyse the uncontrolled responses under six real ground motions. Then the controlled responses are derived using numerical simulations using the state space method in MATLAB. Optimum value of damping coefficient is derived for conventional and double viscous damper. Also, the system is investigated under the two different damper installation schemes for both types of dampers. In Scheme-1, dampers are placed at every storey, while in proposed innovative Scheme-2, the dampers are installed at non-consecutive storey by skipping one consecutive storey. Then, the seismic responses for the asymmetric system installed with LCVD and LDVD with both installation schemes are derived and numerically compared with uncontrolled counterparts with the eccentricities introduced. Also, the responses are compared with symmetric case. To determine the effectiveness of each damper type, the controllability index (Re) is determined. The seismic responses such as top storey lateral and torsional displacement and acceleration counterparts, drift, storey displacements, storey acceleration, bases shear, base torque, top storey flexible as well as stiff edge displacements and damper forces are calculated. The study reveals that the proposed linear double viscous damper and damper installation scheme-2 offers great seismic response control and are more economical in context of number of dampers. These findings underscore the importance of adopting advanced damping technologies in the form of Double Viscous Damper as against conventional configuration of viscous damper’s components.
