LINGUISTIC POLITENESS AMONG PGSD AT BUNG HATTA UNIVERSITY
This study aims to describe the forms of linguistic politeness used among students of the Primary School Teacher Education (PGSD) Program at Bung Hatta University in both academic and non-academic interactions. Linguistic politeness is a crucial aspect in creating harmonious communication and upholding ethical language use within the campus environment. The approach used in this study is descriptive qualitative, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory serves as the analytical framework to identify the positive and negative politeness strategies evident in student utterances. The findings indicate that most students employ positive politeness strategies, such as the use of polite greetings, expressions of empathy, and participation in discussions while maintaining harmony. However, some instances of impolite expressions were also found, particularly in online communication. These findings highlight the importance of explicitly integrating politeness education into the PGSD curriculum to equip students with the ability to build ethical and constructive academic relationships
