An Assessment of Community Policing in Tigray National Regional State
Modern societies around the globe are faced with multiple peace and security challenges ranging from crimes up to transnational terrorism. The idea that the community should be more actively involved in policing has led to the notion of community policing (CP); it is a mutual endeavor between Police and Community to discover and prevent various issues of crime and disorder. CP has been in full implementation in Tigray National Regional State since 2010, in a bid to change the very nature of police practice. The findings of the study show that CP has emerged as a complex and difficult task in both Mekelle and Axum cities with undeniable success stories. This is basically attributed to inconsistent communitypolice relation, low involvement of the community, inadequacy of resources and lack of awareness. Support the community to participate, allocate sufficient resource and consistent awareness creation are in critical need to ensure the success of CP.
