Corruption, Governance, and the Crisis of Higher Education in Nigeria: Implications for Reform
AbstractThe knowledge industry is a vital component of every nation’s economy. It trains, re-trains, and develops human resources who manage and advance all other sectors. This means that any issue affecting the education sector impacts society as a whole, because society depends on it for knowledge, technological expertise, innovation, invention, and scientific progress. The study examined the relationship between corruption, governance, and higher education in Nigeria. It specifically examined how corruption affects governance, which in turn weakens the quality, objectives, and functions of education within the economy. The findings indicate that corruption in the education sector hinders the socioeconomic and political development of society because poorly prepared graduates pose risks—they are neither equipped for critical decision-making nor capable of innovating or maintaining vital infrastructure within the economy. The paper recommends incorporating anti-corruption measures into the academic curricula of schools nationwide and advocates for appropriate sanctions against individuals who engage in corrupt activities within the educational system.
