GOVERNMENT POLICIES PRACTICES AND SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT: A REVIEW OF KANPUR NAGAR

Solid waste management in India holds massive significance because of its important role in maintaining public health, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. The country faced many challenges in managing municipal solid waste (MSW), mainly because of rapid urbanization, population growth, and changing consumption pattern. Effective solid waste management is very essential for reducing pollution, preventing the spread of diseases, preserving natural resources, and encourages sustainable development. In the circumstances of municipal solid waste management, India faces with the issues such as improper infrastructure, insufficient funding, improper collection and disposal practices, and lack of awareness among the society. The improper management of municipal solid waste leads to 11 various environmental and health risks, which includes air and water pollution, contamination of soil, and various diseases. Addressing these challenges requires approach from various sectors which includes waste segregation at source, acquisition of various innovative technologies for waste treatment and disposal, promoting waste recycling and composting practices, and active participation of community. Government policies play a vital role in maintaining solid waste management practice in India, particularly in municipal solid waste (MSW). Policies provides us with a regulatory framework for waste management practice, it establishes guideline for us to proper waste segregation, collection, transportation, treatment and disposal, and allocate resource resources for infrastructure development. They also promote sustainable practices for solid waste management such as recycling, composting, and turning energy from waste, while maintaining environmental sustainability and public health.
