This essay provides an exposition on the endurance of the concept of light both as a scientific object as well as a metaphor in the culture. The role of light has been put to the fore of ancient religion and philosophy, as well as scientific investigation since the Islamic Golden Age. It still has a major role to play in design today, in photography and contemporary art.
