Climate Change: Its Impact and Sustainable Development in India
Abstract Climate change, defined as long-term shifts in temperature and environmental patterns, is influenced by natural events and human activities. The impacts of climate change are widespread, including increased morbidity and mortality, reduced agricultural productivity, threats to global food production, and rising sea levels. Climate change also exacerbates poverty and affects access to necessities like clean water, food, and energy. Sustainable development is presented as a solution, aiming to maximize human welfare by balancing economic, social, environmental, and cultural aspects. The need for sustainable development arises from the over-exploitation of natural resources, resource scarcity, and climate change. The UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes 17 goals and 169 targets that are not legally binding. Climate change and sustainable development are closely linked, with climate change hindering progress on many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The document presents data on the performance of Indian states and union territories on the SDG Index, highlighting that while overall India's score improved from 60 in 2019-20 to 66 in 2020-21, certain goals, like SDG2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG5 (Gender Equality), require special attention. The document discusses a framework for collaborative advantage and the roles of nodal bodies like NITI Aayog and Planning Departments in institutionalizing the SDGs. It also provides an overview of India's performance on individual SDGs, noting top-performing and lagging states/UTs for each goal. The conclusion suggests that sustainable development should become a lifestyle and is the only way to grow economies without negatively affecting human health or the environment.
