Precision Nutrition Through Nutrigenomics: From Genes to the Plate
Nutrigenomics investigates human health, disease susceptibility, and response to treatment in terms of dietary components relationship with the genome. This area of study, through a combination of genomics, molecular biology and nutrition science, helps us understand why people react in different ways to the same diet and can precisely design nutrition, based upon genetic diversity. Diet in a mechanistic manner, varies gene expression via epigenetic changes, signaling by transcription factors, and microRNA pathways. Have been used in the prevention and management of cardiometabolic diseases, cancer chemoprevention, and performance nutrition. The impact of nutrigenomic knowledge extends to biofortification and sustainable food systems beyond the clinic that enhance population micronutrient status. However, some ethical and implementation issues will have to be considered, such as privacy of data, equity, strength of evidence, and translation. Nutrigenomics will soon provide effective and fair personalized dietary advice, as AI and multi-omics quicken the discovery phase.
