Examination Reforms in Indian Higher Education: Challenges, Innovations, and the Way Forward

Examinations remain the cornerstone of higher education assessment in India. However, the traditional reliance on rote learning, memory-based evaluations, and high-stakes annual examinations has raised concerns regarding fairness, validity, and student well-being. This paper examines the pressing need for examination reforms in Indian universities by exploring historical practices, identifying systemic challenges, and analyzing contemporary innovations. Drawing on both Indian policy frameworks (NEP 2020, UGC Guidelines) and global best practices, it proposes a roadmap for transitioning toward competency-based, technology-integrated, and student-centric evaluation systems. The study emphasizes the role of the Controller of Examinations in ensuring transparency, fairness, and adaptability in assessment practices.
