Occurrence and Distribution of Two Free-Living Rhizopod Protists in Ahmednagar District
Abstract: Rhizopoda, a phylum of amoeboid protists, play a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, influencing nutrient cycling, decomposition, and energy flow. Amoeba, a genus within Rhizopoda, comprises a diverse group of free-living organisms that inhabit freshwater environments worldwide. Despite their importance, the diversity and distribution of free-living rhizopod protists remain poorly understood, particularly in India. Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra, India, offers a unique opportunity to explore freshwater ecosystems, including rivers, dams, and streams. An investigation was undertaken to elucidate the presence and distribution of free-living rhizopod protists in these ecosystems. The study targeted two distinct freshwater environments: Rahuri – Mula Dam and Shevgaon - Dahigaon - Deolane Godavari River. Our findings revealed the occurrence of two Amoeba species, namely Amoeba radiosa and Amoeba leningradensis.
