"From Waste to Resource: Exploring the potential of Zero Waste Approach"
Abstract: The world is facing an unprecedented waste management crisis with millions of tons of waste being generated every year. The crisis leads to environmental pollution, climate change, and economic losses. Managing waste without causing any harm to the environment has to be done in a multi-faceted manner. A zero-waste approach is a comprehensive strategy that assists in avoiding waste generation by designing products, minimizing consumption, reusing and recycling materials, recovering resources, and averting waste disposal. The zero-waste strategy is founded on a few guiding principles: Design for recyclability and reusability, optimize for resource use, enact policies for waste recovery and reduction, adopt circular economy mindset, Engage in cooperation and partnerships, Track and review progress. The zero-waste strategy goes hand in hand with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is one of the main strategies to attain SDG 12. Zero waste encourages sustainable consumption and production patterns, minimizing waste generation throughout the life cycle of products or materials. Through the implementation of a zero-waste strategy, individuals, communities, organizations, and governments can help deliver several SDGs, such as SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 12, SDG 13, SDG 14, and SDG 15. India has been aggressively promoting the concept of zero waste, and a number of cities have successfully adopted various models. The zero- waste approach has potential strategies for the transformation of waste to resources, waste minimization, and encouragement of sustainable development.By applying zero waste approach principles, organizations and governments can collaborate to minimize waste and create a more circular and sustainable economy for future generations and we can achieve a zero-waste future.
