The role of AI in maintaining transparency and accountability in restoring justice across legal systems

Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) in India is transforming the delivery of justice by improving the efficiency, cost, and effectiveness of legal processes. This change is bound to raise issues concerning trust in AI, biases, and impacts on judicial outcomes. There is a persistent shortage of judges in India, coupled with a rising backlog of cases that calls for a structural shift in the approach to problem-solving. There is already some adoption of AI technologies like automation, natural language processing, and machine learning for improving judicial functions. The AI-driven initiatives SUVAS (Supreme Court Vidhik Anuvaad Software) and Digital Lok Adalat are milestones in using technology for improving service delivery through easy access to justice and timely resolution of disputes. This paper analyzes the impact of AI on the Indian judicial system, particularly its use in automating document review and using predictive analytics for case management, alongside the ethical concerns that arise from its use. In the end, the study shows how important it is to take a balanced approach to using AI in the legal system. This way, new technologies will strengthen the integrity of the judicial system instead of weakening it.
