Civic Education as a Catalyst for Active Citizenship and Inclusive Governance
Civic education is essential for developing informed, responsible, and active citizens who can participate effectively in democratic processes. It helps individuals understand their rights, responsibilities, and government systems, promoting awareness and critical thinking vital for meaningful involvement in public life. This study aims to investigate the impact of civic education on active citizen participation and its support for inclusive governance. A qualitative case study was conducted to explore civic education. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with two community members, two local leaders, and two educators, along with observations of civic workshops and educational sessions. The data were analyzed thematically to identify key patterns in participants’ experiences and perceptions. The study found that civic education helps citizens better understand their rights and responsibilities, leading to increased participation in community decision-making. It encourages involvement in local governance, such as attending public meetings and discussing policies. Civic education also empowers marginalized groups, including women and lower-caste communities, to express their concerns and engage in governance. However, limited educational resources, low literacy, and socio-cultural barriers hinder wider civic participation.Civic education acts as a transformative tool for creating inclusive, participatory, and accountable governance systems. By empowering individuals and communities, it establishes the foundation for sustainable democratic practices.
