From Branches to Bytes: SBI and the Digital Finance Revolution in India
Abstract This research paper explores the digital transformation journey of the State Bank of India (SBI) and its role in advancing digital finance in the country. It highlights how SBI has used technology-driven initiatives such as the YONO app, internet banking, UPI, and chatbot services to enhance customer convenience and promote financial inclusion. The study combines primary data collected through surveys with secondary sources, including SBI reports and scholarly articles. Key findings show a growing preference for digital banking, especially among younger users, while also identifying challenges such as limited digital literacy in rural areas and occasional technical issues. SBI’s response during events like demonetization and the COVID-19 pandemic is also examined, showcasing its importance in providing uninterrupted digital services during crises. The paper further analyzes SBI’s strengths, including its wide reach and customer trust, and its weaknesses, such as the need for improved cybersecurity and user experience. It concludes with practical recommendations for strengthening digital literacy, enhancing app interfaces, and exploring future innovations. This study provides useful insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and customers, underlining SBI’s significant contribution to India’s goal of building an inclusive and technology-driven financial ecosystem.
