Comparative evaluation of instrumentation time and quality of obturation using single file system and multiple file system in primary molars in children of age group of 4-8 years: A split mouth randomized controlled clinical trial

ABSTRACT: Background: Pulpectomy is the preferred line of treatment for deep dental caries using various rotary files. There is a paucity of literature on the clinical efficacy of these pediatric rotary files in achieving good quality obturation in minimum time. Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the instrumentation time and quality of obturation using single file system and multiple file system in primary molars in children of age group of 4-8 years. Method: Study will be conducted using two different file systems for instrumentation in the same child in two different appointments. The study will be double blinded, where by, the child and the evaluator will be unaware of the file system used. The primary molars achieved through the inclusion criteria will be randomized and also the file to be used in first appointment will be randomized through coin toss method. Group A: Single file system and Group B: Multiple file system. The quality of obturation and instrumentation time was assessed and the statistical analysis was done using statistical package for social sciences. Results: There is difference in the instrumentation time using Single file system and Multiple file system for pulpectomy in primary molars in children of age group of 4-8 years and there is no difference in the quality of obturation using Single file system and Multiple file system for pulpectomy in primary molars in children of age group of 4-8 years respectively. Conclusion: The following conclusion can be drawn from the data obtained in our study: - · Pulpectomy is possible by using single file system as an alternative to multiple file system in children · Routine use of multiple file system for pulpectomy procedure results in discomfort in children and operator fatigue. · No significant difference with respect to obturation quality were observed clinically after the use of single file system and multiple file system. Keywords: single file system, multiple file system, pulpectomy, primary teeth.
