Vision of The Future: Experiences of Out-Of-School Youth In Alternative Learning System
This study explored the experiences of out-of-school youth (OSY) enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS), focusing on their coping mechanisms and vision for the future. Specifically, it aimed to examine the challenges they encountered and the strategies they used to overcome these difficulties. A phenomenological approach was adopted to gain a deep understanding of their lived experiences within the ALS context. Participants took part in in-depth interviews and a focus group discussion. Using a semi-structured interview guide and thematic coding for data analysis, the study surfaced meaningful themes. For the first objective—coping mechanisms for the challenges encountered by ALS out-of-school youth—key themes emerged, including Social Support, such as the role of family, friends, and mentors; Time Management, particularly in balancing responsibilities such as work and learning; and the importance of Celebrating Progress, which helped sustain motivation and engagement. The second objective focused on insights drawn from their experiences and coping practices. Emergent themes included Resilience and Persistence, as learners demonstrated determination despite socioeconomic and personal obstacles; Empowerment through Education, as participation in ALS enabled them to regain a sense of purpose and hope; and a growing Vision for the Future, driven by their educational progress and personal development. The findings highlight the transformative potential of ALS in the lives of out-of-school youth.
