Socio-Economic Profile of Fishermen in Coastal Region of Palghar District
Abstract: India's fisheries sector, encompassing a rich diversity of marine and freshwater species, contributes over 10% to global fish biodiversity and more than 5% to the country's agricultural GDP. Recognized as a “sunrise industry,” it plays a vital role in ensuring food security, employment, and income, particularly for marginalized coastal communities. The marine fisheries segment alone accounts for around 1% of the national GDP and sustains the livelihoods of over 28 million people. Maharashtra, with its expansive coastline, is a major hub for marine fishing, and Palghar district stands out for its ecological richness and heavy dependence on fisheries for rural livelihoods.Despite its economic importance, the sector is plagued by socio-economic vulnerabilities such as low education levels, lack of access to infrastructure and credit, seasonal employment, and the adverse impacts of climate change. This study focuses on examining the socio-economic profile of artisanal fishermen in Palghar’s coastal villages, aiming to understand key indicators like income, education, occupational patterns, asset ownership, and access to government support.Using a descriptive research design, primary data were collected from 190 respondents across 19 fisheries societies through structured interviews. The findings highlight issues such as moderate income levels, high operational costs, limited credit access, and an aging workforce. These insights underscore the urgent need for targeted policy interventions aimed at improving education, financial inclusion, market access, and technological adoption. Strengthening these areas is essential for building sustainable and resilient livelihoods in the coastal fisheries sector of India.
