D.4.1 - New generation EMS for HEMS, HESS and flexibility management report
The InterSTORE project is structured around two pillars of development. The first pillar is developing tools and protocols to ensure seamless communication between different energy assets, using IEEE2030.5 communication protocol and NATS messaging structure. The second pillar is enhancing the ability to manage and monetize flexibility in energy systems through advanced EMS solutions. The later was of particular interest in work package 4 and task 4.1, where project partners focused on upgrading existing Energy Management Systems (EMS) to support integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and improve performance, thereby contributing to the overall efficiency and resilience of the energy grid. Among various segments of DERs, connection of Hybrid Energy Storage Systems (HESS) was among the main project’s objectives. HESS segment encompasses batteries, heat pumps, renewable energy sources (RES), electric vehicles (EVs), and loads. Flexibility Management Platform The Flexibility Management Platform developed by CyberGrid developed steps to achieve native communication via IEEE2030.5 over NATS and connection to Open Data Space Additionally, the platform incorporates tools such as the State of Charge (SoC) manager, deviation fighter, and ramping manager to optimize battery performance. Finally, Market Arbitrage Tool and Energy Community Toolkit are the essential components in optimizing energy both internally and externally (on the market). Hybrid Distributed Energy Management System The Hybrid Distributed Energy Management System (HyDEMS) developed by HESStec is designed to optimize the operation of HESS and DERs. Key features include the Interoperability Toolkit, which ensures robust interaction between various energy components and compliance with IEEE2030.5 standards and Communication Interface Deployment to facilitate seamless communication with different control architectures. The Hybridization Tool and State of Function (SoF) as the key advances of the interoperable toolkit in this project, optimize the performance of hybrid energy storage systems and standardize the evaluation of energy storage systems. Home Energy Management System The Home Energy Management System (HEMS) was upgraded to incorporate hybrid battery dispatch and developed a web application for broader use. Key functionalities include incorporating market signals and environmental impact data. This is achieved through Price and Emission Incentive retrieval, predicting energy demand and optimizing battery dispatch with Forecasting, all already existing services in the HEMS. The goal was to reduce energy supply costs and minimizing environmental impact via Load Optimization, while considering battery degradation. The interface provides the ability for interactive simulations and performance visualizations through the Web Application. Multi-physics Energy Management System The Multi-physics Energy Management System integrates DERs, specifically electric heat pumps, to couple thermal and electrical energy domains. The system aims to enhance energy autarky and optimize power injection/consumption. Key components include addressing versatility, dynamic adaptability, and computational performance through Concept Development, using IEEE2030.5 and NATS network for seamless communication via Interoperability Implementation, and enhancing energy autarky and optimizing power injection/consumption through Operational Optimization. EV Hybrid Distributed Energy Management System The EV Hybrid Distributed Energy Management System developed by Enel X focuses on integrating diverse assets using IEEE2030.5 over NATS and optimizing energy consumption. Key components include integrating diverse assets using IEEE2030.5 over NATS through the Interoperability Toolkit and managing DERs and optimizing energy consumption via Flexibility Service Implementation.
